One of my favorite anime series, Revolutionary Girl Utena (1997) was originally conceived as a magical girl show. In the liner notes for the second box of this year’s re-release, staffer Yuichiro Oguro describes the early concept:
“We were thinking of it as a TV series for children for which a toy maker would be the main sponsor, and they’d sell transformation items and whatnot. It was a story about a team of pretty soldiers who dressed in men’s clothes fighting a villain called ‘End of the World’ … Since the setup was that the main character transformed when she kissed someone, the word ‘kiss’ was in the title. The idea for this transformation was Ikuhara’s, but Ms. Saito seemed to like it quite a bit as well.”
Obviously helmer Kunihiko Ikuhara was considering trying to cater to the same magical-girl-loving audience that his Sailor Moon SuperS (1995) did. However, while some fans do classify today’s Utena as a magical girl series due to the mystical transformations, Oguro recalls that as production progressed the staff attempted to distance Utena from the mahou shoujo genre:
“The Utena plan is made of ‘subtraction’ and ‘addition’. Around this time, we were working to subtract transformations, surefire attacks, evil organizations and other stereotypical elements of the so-called ‘transforming fighting girls show’ pattern. Afterward, we realized we’d subtracted too much, and we hastily added some things, but the end result of it all was that the project which had begun as a ‘transforming fighting girls’-type show evolved into something mysterious that couldn’t be called that anymore. Revolutionary Girl Utena was becoming Revolutionary Girl Utena.”
The Utena we see today, then, is not quite a magical girl show anymore, but it was born and raised within the genre and its influence still shines through. (For these notes from Oguro and other great insights, buy the second box set!)
